Artist of the month: (The) Silent Days

Leaving aside their power-pop inspired by the 90’s that we could ear on their debut album "I Am Nothing", which was released in 2008, (the) Silent Days reveal a more pop and more aerial sumptuous-sounding universe to give way to an increasing musical maturity.

Recorded and produced at studio Microclimat in Epinal by Vincent Hermon at the initiative of the executive producer Dominique Marotel, the aptly named California EP suggests broader and further afield horizons thanks to its subtle arrangements. Five songs inspired by 70's California pop and by today's songwriters such as John Vanderslice, Lou Barlow, Evan Dando or Josh Rouse to name a few, this new record gives birth to an imaginary world and calls more than ever to dream, to escape and travel.

Since having started working together in 1999, MODFUNK have already made a huge impact on the dance music, with numerous singles and remixes to their name. Their first album was released in 2002 and contained elements of classic house, funk, r & b and jazz and was hailed as one of the most important debut albums on the Polish scene. MODFUNK has since produced a number of other club tracks for a range of independent and major labels including Machinge Gun Ibiza Records [London], Help Yourself [France] and Sony BMG [Poland].

MODFUNKs "Supefuzja" album was released in 2002. Since then the group has worked with such artists as Envee, Evah, Reni Jusis, Marysia Sadowska, Demon, Philippe Zdar (Cassius), dA frESh, Junior Frank, Kolombo, Beatnick, Alex Costa, Supa Channel, Tail Spin.

From New York originally and raised in Puerto Rico Kathie Talbot utitilzes her Newyorican roots within her music, beats and sonics. Kathie started working in film, television and commercials as a vocalist for several years before getting involved with composing and remixing. Her insatiable passion to create and with a background in playing flute and vocals gave her the opportunity to "get technical" and now create whatever came/comes to her. Kathie lives and works in Los Angeles where she works for various music houses, remixes, commercials, music for licensing, composing teams whereby she is utilized for vocals, additional cues, sound design and being a part of the team (a favorite working process).

In 2005, Ironhorse Music Group LLC was created as an avenue for urban recording artists in the greater New York area. Its initial roster has had nominal successes in record sales, digital downloads as well as cable television, DVD and straight-to-DVD placements.

Since then, the New York based record company has expanded beyond the greater Tri-state area, forming partnerships and lasting relationships in Canada, Germany, Ireland, Australia and South Africa through licensing via publishing ventures with Vintage 75 Music and Arts of Alice.

Perfectzeromusic was founded as an Independent-Label in 2007.

Part of perfectzeromusic is the Supernova Studio, situated in the medievel town of Hachenburg in Germany’s 'West Forest' (well known for its fantastic beer), where music for Film, Advertising and PC-Games is also composed and produced.

Here, the perfectzero-Artists can realize their ideas in optimal conditions without the usual pressures.

Artist of the month: Soldout

Soldout are Charlotte and David. They met in 2003 and recorded a demo mixing each others influences.

Definitely electro, but deep and sensitive, they signed their music on the belgian label Anorak Supersport and released their first album Stop talking in Benelux in 2004.

With the support of all press and radios, they started touring and soon became everybody's favourites.

From the crazy kids to the new wave lovers, the nightclubbers, the mudlovers, the nostalgics of EBM, and the return of the eighties dance kings, they all fell for this fresh and sweaty band.

Composers of the month: Jess Stroup

Born into a musical family, Jess Stroup took an interest in music at a young age. Beginning with piano at the age of six, he studied many instruments growing up, including piano, double bass, violin, drums, and classical guitar. Live instruments make up the majority of Stroup’s music, with guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and ethnic instruments frequently appearing in his compositions. A graduate of New York University’s music production program, he is also a trained audio engineer, and it is this blend of technical knowledge and musical background that creates a cutting-edge yet familiar, organic sound.

Dan Phillipson lives in the North-West of England and has been writing music professionally for just over a year, after studying contemporary music at University and graduating in 2007. He is also building up a reputation for providing excellent custom written music for advertising, film & television.

Dan mainly creates really appealing and well produced pop/rock crossovers and electronica/ambient tracks but he also writes beautiful solo piano tracks along with some dramatic soundtrack pieces.

For 30 years already, the jazz label Igloo Records has been providing a platform for new talent in European jazz, notably Philip Catherine, Eric Legnini, Steve Houben and Nathalie Loriers...

Early releases on Igloo include Chet Baker and guitarist Philip Catherine. But more than anything else, the label has provided a platform for young musicians from jazz and contemporary music.

Over the years, it has had the privilege of releasing first albums from pianists Eric Legnini and Nathale Loriers, the vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher and Melanie De Biasio.

Titanium is a dynamic music production and publishing company which works collaboratively with artists to write and produce engaging, commercially successful music.

Titanium is a company started by Michael Conn, who was one of the leading classical guitarists of his generation. Signed to Decca, Michael was one of the few artists in this field to sell hundreds of thousands of records worldwide. He gave his final performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Michael then became a leading composer for Television and Film, most notably placing adverts for Ford, Apple and Coca Cola, as well as the soundtrack for the BBC’s coverage of the Sydney Olympics. Whilst working on films, Michael began collaborating with leading pop and dance artists and producers, and since has contributed on several successful albums.

Jesper Mejlvang startede sin karriere som "side man" men er nu klar til at debutere som singersongwriter på sit første soloalbum FORTITUDO.

Op igennem firserne og halvfemserne optrådte han med mange både danske og udenlandske solister og bands som: One Two, Thomas Helmig, Nils Landgren, Lis Sørensen, Robert Palmer, Sanne Salomonsen og Eddie Harris.

Jesper Mejlvang startede Danser Med Drenge sammen med Phillippa Bulgin og Klaus Kjellerup. Turnélivet bragte ham rundt i verden fra Grøn Koncert i Danmark til Hollywood Bowl, USA.

I forbindelse med årtusindeskiftet valgte han at neddrosle turneerne til fordel for en karriere med fokus på den skabende process, som inderst inde er det han tænder på og som i sin tid var det der fangede hans interesse for musik. Derfor byggede han år 2000 Baltic Recording studie faciliteterne på Bornholm, som med hjælp fra bl.a. EU’s regionale fond nu står som et af nordens bedste high-end studier i de flotteste omgivelser gud har givet os.

Med det karriereskift fulgte også et mantra : kvalitet og langtidsholdbarhed.

Johnny Karlsson is an award winning Composer/Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist/Audio Engineer/Sound Designer who has created original music and sound design for numerous TV commercials, Games, Films, Trailers, Corporate Logos etc.

Johnny started his career as a guitar player in Sweden, where he played in bands with Andreas Johnson, Leif Sundin and others, before relocating to California. When Johnny arrived in Los Angeles, he studied Guitar, Vocals and music theory in-depth at Musicians Institute, played the LA club scene for about 3 years and later graduated from UCLA's Recording Engineering program.

Johnny now runs his own studio in the hills of Mount Washington and enjoys working in both Pro Tools and Logic Studio.

Belgium born multi-instrumentalist producer Nico has been living and working in Brussels, Berlin, Prague and today in Los Angeles, California where he Joined force with Mophonics, producing music for TV commercials, TV shows and films. Prior to his move to the States, Nico has played keys for the Belgian industrial rock outfit A Split Second and bass with Brian James of the Damned. From the early nineties to this day he is a collaborator with Aussie Bad Seed's Hugo Race and his collective the True Spirit. Nico has graduated in orchestration from the Berklee College of Music.

Jonathan Geer is a solo electro-acoustic artist, born and raised in the epic state of Texas.

He spent his formative years in Waxahachie, the cultural and social hub of the state.

In 2001, Jonathan graduated with a degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

His unique style gathers together many disparate influences including Bjork, Chopin, Coldplay, Royksopp, John Williams, Thomas Newman and others.

You might find him writing a piano concerto one day and an electronic trip-hop ballad filled with mouth noises the next.

Jeff Penczak, a reviewer for online music magazine Foxy Digitalis, describes Jonathan’s music as “...an upper crusty breath of fresh air in this noisy, fast-paced, make-a-buck music business.”  

Jonathan has worked with many film directors locally as well as internationally. He also composed the music for an internet promo trailer of I Heart Huckabees featuring Naomi Watts.
